Max Berry

Painting is the Game
with no endpoint

Max Berry - Artist

Max Berry was born in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1987, remote country that has never quite left him, even after seventeen years living and working in Sydney. Represented by China Heights Gallery, he has exhibited in Madrid, Hong Kong, Beijing, Taiwan and New York, been a finalist in the Wynne Prize, and delivered major commissions including a large-scale mural for Capella Sydney. His dreamlike oil paintings, houses, open fields, dry creek beds, landscapes that hover between the real and the imagined, have earned him a reputation as one of Australian painting’s most quietly distinctive voices. He recently relocated to a rural property near the Glass House Mountain ranges with his partner and young son. We caught up with Max to talk about the long game, the Aqualand commission, and why gardening, it turns out, is not so different from painting.

Max Berry is represented by China Heights Gallery,

Sydney. His work is available at maxberry.com.au.
